Sang Ga-U Village |
|
|
From Lanta Old Town to Ban Sang Ga-U
(Sang
Ga-U village),
it is paved road that both sides covered with greenery rubber trees and
cashew nut trees. Some part of the road must be followed up the hill. There
are few restaurants on the hill or by the road on the way to Ban Sang Ga-U
that the riders can pop in having a drink and enjoy with the beautiful
scenery there.
Along the road you will see many sea gypsy houses down the road by the sea.
There are many villages of sea gypsy people along the road, all are old
houses style. Their lives are easy going : staying in group, some launch
longtail-boats for fishing, some just catch fish by net behind their houses,
coming back in the evening and have chattering together, in leisure time
some making new cages for catching fish or fixing the boats.
There is a trick for those who want to save your time, or not skillful of
riding or driving along the steep dirty road on the west coast to the
national park. You can reach the national park just only few minutes from
the east side of Lanta Island at Ban Sang Ga-U.

Lanta Marine National
Park |
|
|
Situated on the island’s southern extremity, this national park is 134 km2
of tropical evergreen forest with coastal grasslands where Lanta’s hills
suddenly plunge into the sea. There are two beaches in the National Park;
Had Hin Ngam (beautiful stone beach) and Tanode Beach (Palm Beach).
Overlooking from the dramatic vantage point of the cape’s little light
station, you can see the most wonderful panorama of surf crashing on western
cliffs and twin bays. Separating these beaches is a grassy meadow dotted
with sugar palms. The beaches are great for picnic but there is no
accommodation.
The wild forest backdrop is habitat to a host of wildlife such as deer, wild
pigs, langurs, flying lemurs, civets, macaques, monitor lizards, pythons and
nearly 100 species of birds. A 2 km trekking trail walk way along the forest
is provided by the National Park so that a visitor can enjoy nature tripping
and bird watching.
A lighthouse is set up on the hill, which is a symbol of Koh Lanta. Mu Koh
Lanta National Park does not end in the cape but encompasses fifteen
offshore islands in the Andaman Sea. Some of these isles and seamounts are
Krabi’s best dive sites.

Lanta Old Town |
The first and historical town of Koh Lanta located on the east side of the
island. Over a hundred years ago, this is the center of sea trading between
the local and Chinese Sampan boat. The first Chinese family started to live
here at that time and expanded much more to make this place a small Chinese
town. The old town now displays the old Chinese style house on the shore and
reveals the relaxing atmosphere and peaceful life of the Chinese people
along the two side of the street. You can find the municipal of Koh Lanta,
the police station, Koh Lanta’s hospital, a small Chinese temple and a Thai
temple here.
Many years ago, local people that were living around Lanta Old Town in Koh
Lanta Yai traveled to the main land to Trang Province or Krabi Town via this
way at Lanta Old Town as the convenience and close to the main land.
Nowadays, some travel from Saladan Village and some still travel from here,
getting a daily small express boat for 45 minutes to “Ban Bor Moung”
on the main land and continue by minibus to Trang town or Krabi town. And
also from here you can board a longtailed-boat to nearby islands as Koh Ngai
and Bu Bu Island.

View Point |
|
A ‘must see’ is Viewpoint Hill, close to the old Town. It has
breathtaking views of smaller islands off the coast and spectacular sunrise
views. There are also a couple of excellent restaurants here too : Khao Yai
Restaurant , View Point Restaurant and Yuk’s View Point Restaurant. The View
Point is located on the crossed hill between the west and east side of Koh
Lanta, along the main road.
